Glamour Paws is proud to have a column, “All About Pets” in Beacon Magazine. This month’s article is about the importance of professional grooming.

All Breeds of Dogs Need Professional Grooming

When it comes to breeds like the poodle, the maltese, and the shih-tzu and other long haired breeds you think of grooming and allot of maintenance with their hair. Most people would be surprised to know that ALL breeds need to be groomed professionally at some point. Your lab, your basset hound and even your chihuahua or any short haired breed all need that extra professional touch. Remember dogs nails grow as often as ours do and need to be cut regularly, the ears need to be cleaned and hair needs to be plucked even with short haired dogs. Also lets not forget every ones favorite, the anal glands. Anal glands need to be expressed at least once a month and this should only be done by a professionally, if not it can lead to damaging to your dogs glands. As for proper brushing, it is a must! especially with breeds that have a thick coat with allot of undercoat or even just short hair. These types of coats all need to be brushed, combed and blown out on a regular basis. This is a long process and cannot be done in a normal home setting and requires skill and the right tools. With proper grooming you will cut down on the shedding as well. As a responsible dog owner we should all take pride in the way our dogs look from nose to tail. With our busy schedules its hard for us to maintain proper grooming for our furry friends, so that’s why being professionally groomed is a necessity for all breeds and coat types.

With the economy today we are all looking for ways to save money. For some of us one of the things that is getting put to the end of the list is our pets grooming care. Some of us are even trying our hand at grooming our pets ourselves. As a professional groomer I have seen it all, from coats that look like their 5 year old went after them with a pair of scissors to creative trims such as mow hawks to the elusive mullet have all been noted, as well as horrible injuries. I can always spot a self groomed dog because well, it isn’t groomed. The hair is many different lengths and is in total disarray. The coat is not in healthy condition along with many other tell tale signs. When I ask a self groomer where they take their pet to be groomed they always proudly say ” I do it myself” and I always have to bite my tongue. Other than regular maintenance which everyone should do themselves cutting your dogs hair is not a task that should be taken lightly. It’s no easier than cutting your own hair. Everyone wants to think they are a dog groomer but the truth of the matter is that a Groomer goes to grooming school and will spend at least 750 hours of hands on training to learn how to cut hair and groom. Grooming is a learned art and takes many years to perfect. Besides cutting the coat there are many other procedures that are done to complete a full grooming that the average person just has no idea. Proper tools are always a missing equation as well. You can’t do the job right without the proper tools. I always encourage people to brush and comb their pets regularly but tell them to leave the scissors in the drawer! It is one thing to take care of the routine needed daily care and another thing to take on a full grooming on your own. It is doing your pet a dis-service and ultimately will cause your pet the humiliation of a home hair cut. Many people also fear their pets experience at a grooming shop. It should always be a positive experience for your pet to go to the groomer. It teaches your pet to do something without you and will make them proud of themselves. It’s like a day at the spa without mom or dad holding their paw.

Glamour Paws Salon is saving all of the dog hair to send to Matter of Trust so they can make hair booms to soak up the oil from the leak!

What, hair for the oil spill? Yup, you heard right! I will be shipping the hair in boxes to Matter of Trust where the hair is stuffed into recycled nylons (with mesh to provide a strong exterior). These booms arethen tied together and used toencircle and contain oil spills to keep oil from spreading. They protect fragile coves and habitats.

My Cousin Ami also wrote a funny post about my dad on her blog. Here is just a taste:

Missy, the canine star of the show is my uncle’s service dog. She’s a lab-boxer-beagle-lion-monkey mix. For all her quirks (she hates going outside, dislikes men with boxes, and enjoys turning on the heated seats in my aunt’s car) she is a huge help to my uncle. He has lost most of his sight and she helps him get around.

Part of keeping your dog healthy requires regular ear cleaning. If you have a long haired dog you dog will more than likely need the hair plucked out of the ear to keep the air flowing into the canal. Most dogs get ear infections from not getting their ears cleaned regularly. Ear plucking should be left to a professional groomer or your veterinarian. But you can keep the ears clean by using a mild ear cleaner available from your vet or groomer. Apply a good amount of solution to a cotton ball and gently wipe in the ear opening. Don;t ever use Q-tips deep in the canal. Your dogs ears should be looked at inside at least once a week. There are many different kinds of ear infections dogs can get such as bacterial infections and yeast infections. Both are easily treatable with proper ear hygiene and regular grooming.
